Panic Attacks In Children and Identifying The Symptoms

As a parent it is difficult watching your child go through a panic attack. There are many symptoms of panic attacks in children. The panic attacks are not a disease but the symptoms indicate the presence of a disorder. The symptoms of panic attacks in children can be treated both medically and through therapy.

Identifying The Symptoms

Identifying the symptoms of panic attacks in children is only made possible where a proper description of their behavior is given. A child suffering from a panic attack may behave in different ways. Some children scream and shout in fear and anxiety while others withdraw from making any interactions with their peers. This may happen due to embarrassment about their condition or the fear of rejection.

Another symptom of panic attacks in children is shortness of breath. Although this symptom is most common with panic attacks, it is not sufficient proof that the child is suffering from the attacks. This symptom is coupled with skin blotches or blushing as well as unsteadiness. The child may also experience hot flushes, sweating and a rapid heart beat.

A parent can also identify the symptoms by observing their child’s bowel movements. The child may from time to time express the need to defecate or to urinate. This is because of problems related to indigestion and abdominal discomforts. The child may also experience nausea and bloating in their stomach and may complain of chest discomforts or pain and chocking sensations.

The parent on observing these symptoms should seek treatment. In order to adequately deal with the problem, a physician will require all the details related to the symptoms that the parents have observed over time. The treatment for the symptoms of panic attacks in children takes the form of medication as well as behavioral alterations. The input of the parents and the people around the child will determine how fast they are likely to recover since the panic attacks are related to the behavior rather than a disease. The treatment also includes avoiding stimulants and other substances that are likely to aggravate the situation.
