Signs of Anxiety – Mental and Physical Anxiety Symptoms

Identifying and understanding the different signs of anxiety is the first step that you should take in order to conquer this psychological problem. Once you are able to figure out where your anxiety is coming from, it is much easier to find a solution. Eventually, you won’t have to suffer the dire consequences of the condition, such as career issues, alcohol problems and ruined relationships. By learning how to identify the early signs of anxiety, you will also be able to seek treatment much sooner, which is highly recommended if you want a fast and efficient recovery.

Not all kinds of anxiety need medical treatment, however. Some types, such as those that accompany certain stressful events or traumatic times, are perfectly normal and will typically go away on their own. However, if the anxiety lingers long after the trigger has passed, then you should seriously consider doing something about it, such as undergoing professional treatment.

Mental Anxiety Symptoms

Some of the most common signs of anxiety include pondering on thoughts longer than is necessary, having irrational fears about certain events, things or people, and obsessing on particular activities. If any of these things are happening to you, they may be signs of anxiety so you should consult with your doctor right away.

Physical Anxiety Symptoms

Anxiety can also be manifested by physical symptoms such as sweating, nausea, dizziness and increased heart rate. If you experience these symptoms and cannot seem to find any logical explanation for them, there’s a good possibility that you may be suffering from anxiety disorder.

In particularly severe cases of anxiety, a person might mistake the signs of anxiety for a heart attack or a stroke. In such situations, you may experience difficulty in breathing, tightening in the chest, rapid palpitations and shortness of breath. For people who are experiencing such symptoms for the first time, it is not uncommon to erroneously assume that they may be having some other health problems. But if these symptoms are recurrent, it will eventually get easier to correctly identify them as signs of anxiety.

Probably the most important thing you can do when experiencing anxiety symptoms, or when witnessing someone else who is going through them, is to stay calm. Of course, this can be quite difficult when you are already gasping for breath or breaking out in cold sweat. However, the best move is to take yourself away from the place or the situation that is causing your anxiety, preferably to an open area with lots of fresh air. Take a deep breath and think of positive things. Usually, this will be enough to calm you down for the meantime but you should still consult with a doctor for a long-term solution.
