Finding A Treatment For Social Anxiety Disorder

What Are Some of Your Treatment Options?

If you have a social phobia, you may wonder if there is a treatment for social anxiety disorder. Most people suffering from this type of anxiety, have an irrational fear that they are constantly being watched and that the people watching them are judging their actions. They may appear shy and withdrawn.

Treatment For Social Anxiety DisorderThey are afraid they may be criticized for their actions or perceived mistakes.

This fear can go even deeper, whereby they may refuse to go out in public and agoraphobia may set in. They may want to lock themselves inside their home, away from the world, in order to avoid interactions with other people.

What’s worse is that although the person realizes how irrational their fear might be, they can’t really do anything to change how they feel unless they find a treatment for social anxiety disorder…that suits and helps them.

How do I know? I suffered with social anxiety for years, until I made the steps to overcoming social anxiety.

There are different levels of this anxiety disorder. Some of the milder cases may manifest themselves in ways such as extreme nervousness and agitation when having to perform in public. Stage fright is a perfect example.

However, there are also some cases where the symptoms are on the extreme side, like refusing to answer the phone because they are scared to talk to people, or refusing to eat or drink when in the presence of others for fear of being ridiculed of any habit. In severe cases, immediate treatment for social anxiety disorder is necessary because it may develop into anxiety and depression.

  • Anyone can suffer from social anxiety disorder but the most susceptible are children who are just learning to become independent and teenagers who often feel they have to succumb to peer pressure in order to be accepted.
  • In young people it can be quite difficult to distinguish between a social anxiety disorder and ordinary shyness because the symptoms are rather similar. It is important to watch for other signs of withdrawal from society before being alarmed.

The most commonly used treatment for social anxiety disorder is a combination of therapy and oral medicines, albeit natural or prescribed.

Milder cases or those that are diagnosed very early can be overcome with simple therapy sessions so medications may not always be necessary. Plus, there are also herbal remedies for social anxiety that can be used in lieu of traditional prescription drugs.

There are many effective treatments for social anxiety but in order to choose the best one, it would help if you knew how the condition started. For example, if it is only a particular event or person that is causing the anxiety, then you don’t need a treatment…you just need to avoid that person or event.

Social Anxiety Medicines

Social anxiety medicine may not be a very popular choice among people suffering from this disorder, primarily because of the numerous negative side effects associated with this type of treatment. Unfortunately, there are some special cases where medication may be their only option. I don’t like saying that and I will always try to urge people to pursue a natural alternative…but there are always exceptions to any rule.

  • You still have a few different options as to which medicine you are going to take.

There are a few things to understand about social anxiety medicines. First of all, the rumors about side effects are mostly true. Many medications for social anxiety do tend to cause dizziness, nausea, headaches and a few other problems. Some of these social anxiety medicines may also be habit-forming and cause you to display withdrawal symptoms if you stop taking them.

These medications are used for the purpose of managing anxiety, so please check with your doctor and ask many questions first.

You might also be interested to know that there are some natural treatments for social anxiety disorder, such as herbal medicines. These natural remedies are just as effective as ordinary anxiety drugs but do not cause any negative side effects.

Another point to make about herbal supplements for anxiety is that they are much cheaper than prescription medications. Furthermore, you can buy most of them without a doctor’s prescription because they are just like buying vitamins and minerals…and they contain the right amounts of each herbal ingredient.

There are many herbal social anxiety medicines available. They are designed to soothe the anxious symptoms and calm the nerves.

Regardless of whether you use a natural or artificial treatment method, you should definitely look for a way to manage social anxiety and depression.

Through this therapy, one is taught how to develop various social skills through role playing. Once one is adequately prepared to deal with the specific anxiety trigger, they are able to avoid social anxiety.

    • Hi Renee,

Yes, therapy is excellent for learning techniques to help you in social situations and for understanding where the problem/trigger lies. It takes time and a lot of effort, but it is worth it.

While you’re in the middle of this problem, it can feel hopeless – it can feel like you’ll never get better. Life is just one gut-wrenching anxiety problem after another. But this can be stopped, quenched, and reduced in a relatively short period of time. It is important to find a cognitive-behavioral therapist who understands and specializes in the treatment of social anxiety.
