What You Can Do When Deciding To Take Anxiety Medication

For most people who are suffering from anxiety, the first instinct would be to purchase some over-the-counter anxiety medications to help relieve the symptoms that they are experiencing. While there are certainly a lot of effective anxiety treatments, you should also realize that some medications may come with certain risks and complications, especially if you are already undergoing treatment for other illnesses, or if you have a preexisting medical condition.

Getting a Prescription

Obviously, your doctor will be able to tell you which brands of anxiety medication are good and which ones are not. But if you want to get the most effective prescription for your particular condition, it is imperative that you let your doctor know everything about your health condition, including the following:

  • Complete medical history. If you have been diagnosed or treated for any other medical conditions in the past, let your doctor know, even if it seems to have nothing to do with anxiety.
  • Other medications being taken. Give your doctor a complete list of all medications that you are currently taking, from drugs for other illnesses to herbal vitamin supplements. These medications may seem harmless but may trigger unwanted bodily reactions when combined with anti-anxiety medications.
  • Drug addiction problems. If you have struggled with any form of drug addiction in the past, you should let your doctor know. Some medications for anxiety contain addictive substances, so it may be in your best interest to stay away from these drugs.

Taking the Medication

After getting the prescription from your doctor and buying the medication, there are still a few things that you should keep in mind in order to get the most out of your anxiety treatment.

  • Follow the doctor’s instructions exactly. Do not take any more or any less than what your doctor has instructed. Don’t panic if there is still no noticeable effect after a few days because it is fairly normal for anxiety medications to take some time before producing any results.
  • Let your doctor know of side effects. Many anti-anxiety drugs come with a few minor side effects and most of these are transitory. However, it is still best to let your doctor know if you experience anything unexpected after taking the medications.
  • Ask your doctor before taking new medications. If you are currently undergoing treatment for anxiety and wish to take other types of medication, like for cough or fever, or even vitamin supplements, ask your doctor for a go signal first.

There are also natural anxiety medications available that do not have the unwanted side effects as many prescription ones do. By following these simple guidelines, you will be able to conquer your anxiety issues in due time.
