St. John’s Wort works to fight depression because of one of the chemicals, hyperforin – a neurotransmitter, combined with the flavonoids found in this plant. This is the reason for it being said that it helps in treating depression symptoms in many people. Research shows that it is the action of increasing the hyperforin in the brain that actually helps to ease depression symptoms.

In addition to adding hyperforin to the brain, St. John’s Wort helps to ease depression by increasing the amount of dopamine and serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain. These are essential chemicals for your overall well being and they help to give you a sense of euphoria or happiness, ease anxiety and keep you calm and make life easier to take on.

St Johns Wort is also said to have certain side effects, such as headaches and fatigue, a dry mouth, dizziness, diarrhea and nausea. The other point to make is that if you are on prescription medications, it may affect those medications effectiveness. So check with your doctor before taking St Johns Wort.
