Recognizing the Signs of Anxiety Attacks

According to many psychiatrists, the first step towards conquering frequent anxiety attacks is to recognize the earliest signs of the disorder. They also say that while many signs of anxiety are not really a cause for concern, it is advisable to seek professional medical help if the symptoms recur frequently throughout the day.

Oftentimes, recognizing the signs of an anxiety attack is not as easy for the individuals themselves as it is for the people that are around them. For this reason, it would be good to enlist the help of your family, co-workers and other people around you when you feel that you are prone to suffering anxiety attacks. Likewise, if you live with a person who has high levels of anxiety, you should be extremely vigilant and try to monitor them for signs of an impending attack.

Visible Signs of an Anxiety Attack

Some of the earliest signs of anxiety attacks occur internally and are not that noticeable to other people, especially if they are not really watching out for these signs. However, there are also many visible symptoms that happen due to the body’s reaction to the increased flow of oxygen and adrenaline in the body. Such visible symptoms are frequently called fight symptoms or flee symptoms.

Some of the most common physical signs of anxiety attacks include shaking, rapid breathing, increased heart rate and general irritability. If you see these signs in someone, the best approach would be to talk to them in a calm manner and help them regulate their breathing and heart rate by diverting their attention from whatever it is that is causing them to feel anxious. Do not yell at them because this will only make the situation a lot worse.

You have to realize that people who suffer from anxiety attacks do not want to be in that situation at all, so you should not blame them in any way. They are also unable to handle their fears in a rational way so you have to very patient with them.

The above mentioned physical symptoms are the most frequently observed but there are still other visible signs that you may have to look for. Some people have been known to suddenly feel the urge to use the bathroom every 10 minutes or so when an anxiety attack is coming. Still others become tearful and commence rambling as soon as the anxiety attack kicks in.

When someone you know shows any of these symptoms, it is crucial that you stay with him until the attack passes. This is the best way to show your support and keep them from possibly inflicting harm on themselves during the anxiety attack.
