Does Your Anxiety Cause Burning Pins and Needles?

Why Does Anxiety Cause Burning Pins and Needles In Your Body?

Does your anxiety cause you to experience burning pins and needles in your face, arms or legs or anywhere else on your body? A friend of mine has this problem and I wanted to find out more about it so I could try and help her find an answer. I suffer more with cramps, rather than pins and needles…what about you? We all know there are many symptoms for anxiety, but this is another one some of you can add to the list.

Anxiety Pins and Needles

Anxiety Pins and Needles

Apparently many people suffer with this annoying problem. The pins and needles can last for several days or even longer.

So for those suffering with these symptoms it can heighten their anxiety, which in turn creates a vicious circle.

I don’t know the solution and doctors may perform tests, but I have researched some questions and answers that maybe you can relate to, or perhaps you could even let me know of your own experiences.

That way others will be able to compare their own symptoms and add to this article – and hopefully we will find some solutions together.

So, let’s begin with the symptoms. As I said, my friend experiences the burning pins and needles in her face, arms and leg. Other people explain that it feels like twitching or a continual cramping feeling. The cramping I can certainly relate to.

Others are left exhausted by the body’s continual moving, almost like Restless Leg Syndrome.

What Causes Anxiety Pins and Needles?

Pins and needles are caused by compressed nerves, usually in the hands and feet. The blood circulation is affected which is why there is a burning sensation or a feeling of numbness. Everyone has experienced ‘pins and needles’ at some time or another and they are annoying at the best of times, but what about anxiety pins and needles? What causes them?

Charles Linden, an ex-anxiety sufferer who shares his healing techniques in his program The Linden Method, explains in this video.

One interesting thing I found is that a vitamin B12 deficiency can cause pins and needles and painful tingling and numbness. In case you didn’t already know, this deficiency is also associated with depression and anxiety (among many other health problems.)

A magnesium deficiency can cause muscle spasms and cramping. So a magnesium supplement and a Vitamin B supplement may be something to try. If you already take these natural supplements for anxiety, then what else can you do if you have had tests and ruled out any other disorders, such as Neuropathy or MS?

What Can You Do Right Now?

I found this simple technique you can try right now to get your blood moving and circulation happening on CalmClinic.

1.) When it hits your arms, try to clench and unclench your fist a number of times and swing your arms in all directions. This is to normalize the blood flow. This is very helpful if it occurs that you can’t feel anything in your arms and having the tingling, needles and pins sensation. When you move your arms, you request your body to supply blood to the active body part and thus normalize blood circulation. This is why regular exercise, in the long run, helps a lot in maintaining not only physical health but mental health as well.

2.) If it occurs that you feel it in your legs, what you ought to do is to move around, perhaps jog a bit to recirculate the blood in your legs. Because there are compressed nerves in the area, you feel the tingling / ‘anxiety pins and needles’ sensation in your legs. Through leg commotion, you will do the same thing as mentioned in tip number one – recirculate and normalize the blood flow and supply.

3.) If it happens in the upper part of the body such as neck and face. Do the same – rock your head left to right and up and down. It’s just a normal way of saying to your body that I need blood in my neck and face, and so it will correspond soon. Original Article.

I would love to hear if you have these sensations and what you do to try and get some anxiety relief? Perhaps because I take magnesium and vitamin B supplements everyday, I don’t have anxiety cause pins and needles…what about you?

Comments

  1. Since writing my article, I ‘have’ felt the pins and needles in my face…I just thought of it as numbness.

I now realize that is what I have been feeling when I assumed I had a serious problem…but because it would go away, I never went to the doctor about it.

I even thought I may have been getting MS…but now I know it is just an anxiety problem that feels like numbness or pins and needles. Do you get these feelings too?

I have been suffering with pins and needles in my body (different areas) for quite sometime.Reading your comments I think it could be anxiety as I’m a hyperchondriac who always thinks the worst from every ache and pain I have.Symptoms worse on a night when laid in bed thinking about it..will try the vitamin supplements and I know I need to exercise more.its comforting to know I’m not alone with this problem.

        Hi Laura,

It is amazing you commented right now, as this week I am highly anxious about a coming event and I have had my pins and needles (or tingling numbness) in my nose return again.

I am going to take a little bit more vitamin B and magnesium right now to do a test on myself…it will be interesting to see if it goes away completely!
