Inositol For Anxiety and Overall Health

Inositol For Anxiety, OCD and Other Health Benefits

Inositol is part of the B complex vitamin family and has been found effective in promoting brain health. It has been found helpful for treating anxiety disorders, including OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder).

Inositol is necessary for serotonin and acetylcholine hormones to function properly and is used in biochemical processes that effect serotonin receptors.

When the serotonin and acetylcholine hormones get the chance to function properly, you may experience an improved sense of well-being making you feel happier and free from the negative effects of your anxiety.

The Journal of Clinical Psychology revealed that inositol has been proven to help people suffering from a panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder.

Inositol is one of the many amino compounds necessary for numerous processes that are taking place inside our body. Brain functions and cell membrane formation are just a few of those crucial processes that need the help of inositol.

It can be found in high concentrations inside our stomach, heart, brain, liver, kidney and spleen.

It is important to know that certain lifestyle habits such as drinking coffee may actually deplete our levels and result in several other health problems.

Inositol Health Benefits

  • Anxiety Disorders

Besides anxiety and depression, inositol has other benefits to improve your overall health. As I have already explained, this little B vitamin is very helpful for anxiety sufferers.

Several studies and research have been conducted to prove the capability of inositol to improve our brain health and it is now being used as one of the ingredients in many natural supplements for anxiety such as Provanax, to help provide relief from anxiety symptoms.

Here are just a few areas that you may also experience an improvement in…

  • Blood Sugar Levels and Diabetes Complications

Deficiencies in inositol will most likely result to a reduction of insulin sensitivity and an enhancement of insulin resistance and all these will make blood sugar levels to skyrocket. By having sufficient amounts of inositol you will become less vulnerable to many diabetes complications such as heart diseases and eye abnormalities.

  • Cholesterol and Heart Disease

When inositol works with choline the result is the production of lecithin which is responsible for the prevention of fat-build up inside the cell walls. In turn, your arteries, heart and brain are protected against the adverse effects of high cholesterol levels. Furthermore, several studies showed that inositol also helps prevent the stickiness of blood platelets which may result in the reduced risks of heart diseases.

  • Fatigue

One of the causes of fatigue is an inositol deficiency. Inositol is needed for choline to function properly. Choline and inositol have to work together in order to promote proper distribution of food fats. Thus, the body will become more capable of generating the right amount of energy. Many people that suffer with anxiety do not sleep well and therefore are tired all the time and experience extreme fatigue.

  • If our body is lacking in important vitamins and minerals it goes without saying that we will feel unwell.

Foods Rich In Inositol

  • “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” ~ Hippocrates

I love that quote! So let’s take a look at the foods this B-8 vitamin is in. Here are some more ‘mood foods‘ you can add to your diet to reduce anxiety.

For starters, there is wheat germ, brown rice, desiccated liver, lecithin oil, molasses and nuts. Vegetables and cereals also contain a combination of inositol and phosphorous better known as phytic acid. Cantaloupe, rutabaga, bananas and oranges are a few more, plus kidney beans and English peas are also rich food sources.

Another point to make – and it’s a good one – is inositol is found to survive even after the food has been cooked, canned or frozen.

Inositol Supplements

As an added boost, there are inositol supplements, as I mentioned before, but you do have to be careful if you are taking anti-depressant medications, (SSRI’s) – so please check with your doctor first.

If you aren’t taking prescription medications, a natural supplement such as ProVanax contains this important ingredient, which helps boost your serotonin levels. ProVanax also has many other important ingredients that also boost your dopamine levels and reduces your cortisol levels (the one that causes the weight problems often related to stress.)

  1. As someone who suffers from constant anxiety..I wanted to say THANK YOU. This helpful article has not only helped me gain the research I need to overcome my problem, but broadened my horizons on the condition. Inositol seems to be something that, thanks to you, I am going to look into. I cannot express in words how grateful I remain…

    • Thanks Neil, I am glad you found my article helpful. It’s just one of B group vitamins that can certainly improve our health in so many ways.

If you find any more interesting bits of information about Inositol that I haven’t covered, I would love to hear from you.

  2. I have to say I have not heard of ProVanax until I stumbled onto this blog post. As someone who suffers from panic disorder and GAD, and has not done well with prescribed meds, I have been pulling my hair out looking for something that will help. I will check into ProVanax as it sounds very positive.

    • Hi Amanda, I have only ever received positive feedback about ProVanax. So it is certainly worth a try. It also contains many other wonderful ingredients for providing relief from anxiety symptoms.

  3. I actually know of someone who took ProVanax, and had nothing but positive experiences with it and it did help manage her anxiety. More and more people need to know there are effective herbal remedies that will not cause side effects like typical antidepressants and antianxiety prescribed meds are known to do.

    • That’s great Macy! I know it has helped many people too…and yes, the more people that know there are natural supplements to help with their anxiety symptoms, the better.

  4. I have to say this is the first time that I have heard of inositol and it was interesting to learn about it. Instead of taking drugs, I would say eat up the foods that are rich it in. This way you do not have to worry about side effects.

    • Hi Glenna,

Well I would have to agree that eating healthy foods is a far better idea than taking drugs. Eat healthy…be healthy and without side effects…a win-win situation!
